Essential oils ARE ingested in some countries, but from what I've read, they're prescribed by physicians. So I'm assuming there's rigorous training and stringent guidelines. Okay by me. I think it's silly to believe it's okay in one country but not in another. But I also think it scares people because there ARE no standards for what's acceptable in the U.S. and most of us don't want every poorly-trained aromatherapist to go around blithely making up and handing out questionable (and many times, dangerous) concoctions. For instance, it wasn't too long ago that a blog post made the rounds where one of the MLM reps showed how she'd made her own essential oil eye drops and commented about how safe they were and what a difference they could make in your life. Well yes, if you don't mind the possibility of going blind!
So I think the subject could and should be addressed. The problem is how to get that conversation started and who should be included on the policy-making team. Thorny issues to be sure but I don't see it going away so maybe it's time to plant the seed - just a small seed, mind you - but a seed nonetheless, for professional standards and requirements that should be met. I'm just sayin'.
